5 Easy Ways to Manage Skin Hyperpigmentation

We all want that flawless baby soft skin that boosts our inner confidence so we can exude a confident vibe whenever we want. The problem is that sometimes life can get in the way. Dark spots from hyperpigmentation can develop on your skin and leave unwanted discolorations in places you would rather they not be.

Hyperpigmentation refers to any patch of your skin that may look a little darker or discolored when compared to your natural skin tone. This tends to occur mainly when the natural melanin in your skin overproduces too much of a brown pigment, usually due to some environmental cause like a bug bite, excessive itching, acne, or otherwise. The good news is that there are some easy fixes that you can implement to help minimize the effects of hyperpigmentation.

1. Avoid Scratching Any Bug Bites or Blackheads

To avoid scratching a recent mosquito bite can be one of the most challenging things ever. Every spring and summer, however, we get inundated by all kinds of annoying insects that can result in itchy spots around our bodies. The same is true for blackheads that almost scream to be squeezed and popped. The reality is that doing either will generally increase the level of inflammation around the affected area, which can in turn lead to skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation. The more you touch the area, the worse it can typically get. Our advice, do not scratch the itch.  It will usually go away if you give it a little time.

2. Explore Prescriptions

Thankfully, there are a number of prescription-strength medications, such as hydroquinones or lighteners can help fade your darker spots. We at Roots & Bloom, believe that prescribed medication should mostly be a measure of last resort only because they can have some side effects, especially if applied incorrectly. We generally like to recommend non-chemical or natural ingredient solutions but recognize that some situations call for the big guns, so we wanted to include it on our list. Always, always, always consult your healthcare provider first before using any kind of prescription medication.

3. Talk to a Dermatologist

A dermatologist is a specialist doctor trained in conditions that involve the skin, hair, and nails. They are experts in health issues like hyperpigmentation and can offer better advice than most other sources. You want to get a dermatologist involved if your over-the-counter solutions are not working, or you are concerned things could get worse sooner than later.

4. Keep Your Skin Moist

Using natural skin creams or health products like our incredible AHA/BHA Resurfacing Toner Pads can help lessen the effects of hyperpigmentation by both moisturizing the areas affected and promoting exfoliation of the discolored skin. These pads do an excellent job of accelerating the shedding of old, discolored, or dead skin cells which should help to even out your skin tone over time. Not to mention that they do an amazing job of keeping your skin soft and smooth. You can check out our fantastic AHA/BHA Toner Resurfacing Pads on our website.

We wanted to mention one more tip which includes using sunscreen. Consistently applying sunscreen is more of a preventative measure to help you avoid developing hyperpigmentation all together.  Sun-induced discoloration is pretty common in geographical locations that offer a lot of exposure, like the Southwest or Coastal communities. Putting on a daily sun protective lotion will help to shield your beautiful skin so that you can maintain both your external (and internal) radiance.
