How to Cure Dry, Cracked Heels

How to Cure Dry, Cracked Heels

Age always invites changes in the body. Our hair, skin, eyes, hearing, and voice—they all change as we age. For me personally, the change that stood out most and was most unwelcome occurred with my feet. It seems like I woke up one day and found myself with painful dry, cracked heels. I was desperate for a cure.

And thus, my journey began. I wanted to get back what was once my smooth and soft feet, instead of the feet that I had which were unrecognizable, dry and rough. Not only was it an eye-sore, but they actually felt sore. I was determined to find the best solution.

But first, what actually causes heels to become dry and cracked?

What causes dry, cracked heels?

There are several reasons why we may experience dry, cracked heels. When our body weight is applied to our feet, it creates pressure. This causes the skin to expand outwards. If our skin is dry, it becomes rigid and loses elasticity over time. This makes your feet and heels more prone to fissures and cracking.

The most common causes of dry, cracked heels include: obesity, diabetes, eczema, hypothyroidism, Sjögren's syndrome, juvenile plantar dermatosis, athlete's foot, biomechanical factors such as flat feet, heel spurs, or standing for long periods of time. In addition, open-healed or poorly fitting shoes, as well as dry, cold weather can cause dry, cracked heels.

Solutions for Dry Cracked Heels

My initial plan of action was to remove the cracks and hardened skin by doing foot soaks and then aggressively scaling my heels with a foot file. Though it was painful, this seemed to work fairly well at first.

However, what I shockingly came to find is that the skin was growing back harder and thicker than before. As a result, I scrubbed even harder, but the harder I scrubbed the thicker my skin grew back. It was an endless cycle. Why was this happening?

After some research, I learned that my body was overcompensating for my unprotected feet. That hard skin that I was shaving off my heels was actually a protective measure implemented by the body for protection.

Callused heels are nature’s way of providing your body with a shock absorber, meant for cushioning the bone from hard surfaces. That’s when I decided that being aggressive on my dry, cracked heels was the wrong approach.

How to Fix Dry Cracked Heels

Next, I gave the old Vaseline-and-socks method a try. I literally spent many an uncomfortable night trying to sleep with goopy feet in thick, hot socks. While this solution also helped, I found myself constantly grabbing for that Vaseline jar because the results only lasted for a couple of days. I was more than ready for a longer lasting solution. Plus, I was really sick of having such high maintenance feet.

Fast forward to the advent of Roots and Bloom—a high quality, herbal-infused Foot Therapy product line, specifically designed to cure my dry, cracked heels. As a result of Roots & Bloom, I now have beautiful, soft and smooth feet again.
